16 TeamsThe 2026 World Cup field is officially locked in. With 48 teams, 12 groups, and 104 matches, this is the biggest tournament in FIFA history. The co-hosts—USA, Mexico, and Canada—are leading a FIFA World Cup 2026 lineup that feels much wider and more unpredictable than anything we've seen before.
Now that the playoffs are over, there are no more placeholders. You can see the exact route every team has to take from the group stage all the way to the new Round of 32.
A 48-team format changes everything. Traditional powerhouses have more rivals to worry about, and smaller nations finally get a real chance to make a deep run instead of going home after one bad game. Once you're done checking out the squads, jump over to the World Cup 2026 groups to see who they drew.
Who Made It to the 2026 World Cup?
Expanding to 48 teams means the World Cup is finally living up to its name. The spots are spread across all six confederations. The hosts (USA, Mexico, Canada) got in automatically. Asia is sending a massive nine-team block, including heavyweights like Japan and South Korea alongside rising powers like Uzbekistan and Jordan. Africa also brings a deep lineup of 10 teams, featuring everyone from Senegal and Morocco to Cape Verde.
In the Americas, Curacao, Haiti, and Panama survived the CONCACAF gauntlet, while CONMEBOL is bringing its usual heavy hitters like Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. New Zealand locked down Oceania's guaranteed spot. And Europe? UEFA is bringing an army of 16 teams, loaded with the usual suspects like France, England, Germany, and Spain.
With the field set, everything drops into 12 groups of four. You need to finish in the top two to automatically advance, but even the eight best third-place teams get a lifeline. That creates a chaotic new Round of 32, which makes keeping up with the match schedule absolutely crucial.
Once the whistle blows, things move fast. The easiest way to track the chaos is through our live standings hub. If you're traveling, make sure to read up on the host cities in our World Cup venues guide.
Europe at World Cup 2026
As always, France, Germany, Spain, and England arrive expecting to win the whole thing. France still has ridiculous attacking depth, Germany looks completely revitalized, Spain controls the midfield better than anyone, and England brings a terrifying amount of attacking pace.
But they aren't the only ones. Portugal and the Netherlands both have the talent to reach the final week. Portugal's squad is loaded with big-game experience, and the Dutch are physically overpowering. Meanwhile, Belgium and Croatia are flying slightly under the radar—but write off Croatia's tournament pedigree at your own risk.
