Omid Noorafkan

Noorafkan was born in Rey, Tehran Province, on 9 April 1997 and grew up in Baharestan County. His parents came from Sarab, and his family background is Iranian Azeri. Football became part of his routine at an early age through local youth teams.

His development stands out because he did not remain in one position. He began as a striker, moved into defence during his academy years, and later established himself in midfield. That path explains the range he now offers as a central midfielder, defensive midfielder, or left-back.

Birthplace, family, and youth football journey

Noorafkan played for Erfan Nasim Shahr from 2005 to 2007 and then joined Ehsan Rey. He spent four years there before entering Esteghlal's academy in 2012 at age 15. Coaches used him as a striker in his early years, but Esteghlal's under-19 staff shifted him to left-back.

The move changed the skills he had to develop. A young forward can concentrate on finishing and movement near goal. A left-back must read the space behind him, judge pressing distances, defend one-on-one situations, and support attacks from a deeper starting point.

Esteghlal later tested him as a defensive midfielder. His left foot and experience on both sides of the ball helped him settle into the new role. He learned to receive passes with opponents behind him, protect the centre, and move the ball into wide areas without taking unnecessary touches.

Noorafkan has identified Philipp Lahm as a football influence. The comparison should not turn into a claim that the players share the same level, but the positional connection is clear. Lahm played full-back and midfield, and Noorafkan built his own professional identity around a similar type of versatility.

Noorafkan's physical profile supports several roles. His 184 cm height gives him enough reach for midfield duels and defensive headers, while his movement lets him cover the left channel. Coaches can use him inside or outside without changing the balance of the whole selection.

His left foot affects build-up angles. From left-back, he can pass down the touchline or step inside onto his stronger foot. From central midfield, he can open his body toward the left and switch play before an opponent closes the passing lane.
