Neymar Returns as Ancelotti Names Brazil World Cup Squad

Carlo Ancelotti has named Neymar in Brazil's World Cup 2026 squad, giving the 34-year-old forward a route back to the biggest tournament after a long spell away from the national team.
Brazil announced the squad on May 18, and Neymar's inclusion became the defining decision. Ancelotti had to choose between recent rhythm, long-term fitness questions, and the match-changing quality Neymar can still bring when he receives the ball between the lines.
The decision also reshapes Brazil's attacking hierarchy. Vinicius Junior remains a leading left-sided threat, while Raphinha, Rodrygo, Matheus Cunha, Endrick, Rayan, and Igor Thiago give Ancelotti different profiles across the front line. Neymar adds pause, disguise, combination play, and set-piece danger.
Neymar's role does not have to mirror his peak years. Brazil can use him as an inside forward, a central creator, or a controlled-minute attacker who helps unlock games after the first hour. That flexibility matters because Ancelotti has built much of his career around fitting elite attackers into balanced teams.
Brazil enter Group C with Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. The group gives Ancelotti three different tactical tests: Morocco's structure, Haiti's transition threat, and Scotland's physical organization. Neymar can help Brazil find passes in congested areas, but Brazil will need runners around him to stretch back lines.
The selection carries risk because Neymar's recent injury history will follow every training session and lineup decision. Brazil cannot build the whole attack around a player whose minutes may need control. Ancelotti's task is to make Neymar an enhancer, not a dependency.
Joao Pedro missing the final group of forwards shows how tight Brazil's attacking choices became. Ancelotti has favored proven tournament influence and elite creative range, even though Brazil have younger forwards who played their way into the discussion during the build-up.
For Brazil supporters, Neymar's return changes the emotional temperature of the tournament. It also gives opponents a familiar problem. If he stays fit enough to play sharp minutes, Brazil gain a player who can turn patient possession into a clear chance without needing a long passing sequence.
Ancelotti's decision also protects Brazil from becoming too predictable. Vinicius can stretch the left side, Raphinha can attack from the right, and Cunha can work between midfield and attack. Neymar gives the staff another way to connect those pieces when opponents defend narrow and dare Brazil to force passes through traffic.
The biggest selection test will be defensive balance. Brazil cannot let Neymar's return weaken the pressure structure around the ball. If he plays centrally, the midfield behind him must close lanes fast. If he starts wider or comes from the bench, the full-back on that side needs protection during turnovers.
The Joao Pedro omission adds another layer because it shows Ancelotti was not choosing a simple form table. He chose a squad with specific tactical roles: direct wingers, central finishers, creators, and senior voices. Neymar fits the creator and senior-voice category even if his recent minutes require caution.
Brazil have chased a sixth World Cup title since 2002. Neymar's inclusion does not solve that drought by itself, but it gives Ancelotti a player who understands the weight of the shirt and the speed of knockout matches. The staff now have to turn that experience into useful minutes rather than emotional noise.
The final warm-up period will show how Brazil intend to frame him. If Neymar trains with the starters, opponents will prepare for him as a central piece. If he works as a managed option, Brazil can keep the story quieter and use him when match conditions suit his strengths.
